A group of Maine veterans traveled to Washington, D.C., Oct. 31 to visit war memorials and participate in a wreath laying ceremony.

The group of 45 veterans, along with guardians and volunteer trip leaders, departed Portland Jetport and arrived in Baltimore, Md., where they boarded buses to head to Washington, D.C. During the first stop of the day, veterans stopped at the WWII Memorial before visiting Arlington National Cemetery.

Members of the group watched the “Changing of the Guard” at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Several veterans who served in three major conflicts, including Carmine Pecorelli of Belfast, participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb in Arlington National Cemetery.

Veterans also visited the Korean, Vietnam, Iwo Jima, Air Force and Navy memorials.

The October visit marked the fifth Honor Flight trip for Maine veterans.
