A sun-blinded driver smashed into the rear of a vehicle turning into a local business on Searsport Avenue (Route 1) the morning of July 20, sending three people to the hospital.

Shortly after 8 a.m., Belfast Fire Department, Ambulance and Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Searsport Avenue in front of Tire Warehouse. The driver of a 2003 Pontiac Vibe, 27-year-old Pam Guaydacan of Swanville, had stopped to turn left into the business, Officer Mike Rolerson said, to get a tire replaced on her vehicle.

Traveling behind Guaydacan in a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo was 58-year-old Keith Clark of Belfast who had reached up to lower the visor in his vehicle because the sun was in his eyes, Rolerson said. Clark failed to see Guaydacan's stopped vehicle and slammed into it.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

Clark was taken to Waldo County General Hospital for treatment after complaining of wrist and hip pain, Rolerson said. Guaydacan and her son were also taken to the hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

Just two days prior, a Belfast man suspected to be driving under the influence of drugs caused a two-vehicle wreck close by, in front of Fireside Inn & Suites. Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries following that crash.
