If it is the end of February and approaching March, it must be time for end-of-season youth ice hockey tournaments at the Midcoast Recreation Center, including the annual Midcoast Classic Tournaments and even a state event this past weekend.

The youth ice hockey events draw teams from around Maine to compete in rink battles over a two- or three-day period.

Two weeks ago, 12 U8 teams converged on the MRC, with the local squad winning the tournament. It was the first of three Midcoast Classic Tournaments scheduled for this season.

However, this past weekend, it was the Tier III Peewee (U12) state tournament that took center stage, as the Maine Coast Skaters Association Storm finished 2-2 in the event that went Friday through Sunday, Feb. 24-26.

MRC will get back to its Midcoast Classic Tournaments on March 10-12 for the U10 group, then on March 17-19 for the U12 division. The season will end with a figure skating show March 25-26.

In the U12 state tourney, Midcoast Polar Bears defeated Casco Bay 3-1 in the championship. It was an upset, of sorts, as Casco Bay was unbeaten during the regular season.

The tourney scores included:

Friday — Gladiators 4, Sam Moose 1; Casco Bay 4, Maine Jr. Black Bears 2; Midcoast 4, CMYH 0; and MCSA 7, Southern Maine 3.

Saturday — Maine Jr. Black Bears 2, Sam Moose 2; Casco Bay 2, Gladiators 1; Midcoast 4, Southern Maine 2; MCSA 5, CMYH 2; Maine Jr. Black Bears 1, Gladiators 0; Sam Moose 1, Casco Bay 1; Midcoast 4, MCSA 0; and CMYA 1, Southern Maine 1.
