The driver of a pickup truck was killed March 6 when he veered into oncoming traffic and the smaller vehicle was struck head-on by an oil tanker truck on Route 3 in Liberty.

The crash took place near the intersection of Marshall Shore Road and Lake St. George State Park. The tanker truck driver, Trent Cates, 56, of Solon attempted to avoid the collision with the pickup truck, which was driven by 70-year-old Herman Reynolds of Belfast, State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said. Cates was not injured in the crash.

The oil truck, owned by H.O. Bouchard, ended up on its side in a grassy bog and troopers say no oil has leaked.

Traffic near the crash site is being detoured onto Boynton and Lampson roads. Troopers say traffic will be diverted around the crash site for the remainder of the afternoon.

No additional information is being released at this time.
