During elections March 10, Palermo voters chose Ilene McKenney as the selectman to take over as Harry Dean Potter vacates his seat on the board. She was challenged by Donald Barrett.

Other open positions each drew one candidate. Dennis Keller was elected to a one-year term as assessor; Scott S. Childs will serve as road commissioner for one year; a three-year term for general assistance was won by Darryl McKenney; and Sandra Devaney will fulfill a three-year term on Regional School Unit 12's board.

At Town Meeting March 11, residents approved a 34-article warrant that included more than $185,000 in expenditures from the unassigned fund balance (also known as surplus). Surplus funding will be used to boost the Capital Projects Reserve Fund, for legal expenses, to purchase an inventory of trash bags for sale and to reduce the 2017 tax rate. Also approved was $15,000 in surplus money for use by selectmen to meet unanticipated expenses and emergencies.

Funding for Public Health and Safety saw a significant decrease from last year's approved appropriations, mostly attributed to a changeover in trash handling. Tri County Solid Waste was appropriated $36,500 in 2016 but zeroed out in this budget. New to the budget is $18,000 for China Transfer Station. Palermo Rescue also was not funded; nor did it spend any money in 2016, which reduced appropriations from the prior year by $5,500.

Selectmen recommended requested amounts from social service agencies be approved and voters concurred with all but one request: funding for the 2018 Palermo eighth-grade class trip. No request was made in the 2017 budget but residents approved $6,000 — triple the amount appropriated in 2016, and the largest total approved for one group. An article to discontinue out-of-town organization contributions was defeated and this year each organization was funded at requested amounts.

In other town business, voters agreed to adopt an official town seal.
