Eight Midcoast swimmers, five from the Penobscot Bay YMCA and three from the Waldo County YMCA, trekked to snowy Harvard University for the largest masters’ meet this side of the national championships.

The local pool athletes, who competed on consecutive weekends, were part of the 56-swimmer Maine delegation among the 799 competitors from New England, the rest of the US & Canada.

The Midcoast eight garnered 14 championships, seven of which were New England records, eight seconds, 13 thirds, six fourths and four fifths. They were part of a winning relay team, four seconds and two fourth-place relays.

Four Midcoast swimmers were able to compete in all four days of the meet. Events in the meet were March 11-12 and 18-19.

They competed in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, along the individual medley (all four strokes) and relays.

Bill Jones of Hope, recently turned 80, has outlived most of his competition, he said. Among the five 80-84 men, he won his 13 individual events, setting New England records in the six butterfly and individual medley events, and Maine records in nine, and won the meet high-points trophy.

Susan Rardin of Camden, who competed against 12 women ages 65-69, garnered two seconds, six thirds and two fourths, as well as swam two relays.

Ellen O’Donnell of Warren, who competed against 17 women ages 60-64, took four seconds, third, fourth and two fifths among her nine events, as well as joined Rardin on two relays.

Doug Roth of Warren, who competed against 46 men ages 55-59, swam all 13 allowed individual event, as he played third, two sevenths, eighth, two ninths, two 11ths, 13th and 15th, among others and was nine in points in his age group.

The squad’s younger members were limited, by work or family obligations, to fewer days and events. For example, Pieter deHart had to leave for work in the Amazon jungle.

Mara Crans of Rockport, who competed against 36 women ages 50-54, finished fifth in the 1,650 free.

Pieter deHart of Thorndike, who competed against 28 men ages 35-39, won 4 fourths and swam a relay.

Jennie deHart of Thorndike, who competed against 29 women ages 35-39, won the 200-yard breaststroke, as she set a New England record in the process. She also took two seconds and sixth, as well as she swam two relays.

Brittany Harrington of Searsport, who competed against 48 women ages 30-34, took a second and three fourths.

Maine’s team was third among eight “large” teams at the meet, losing to home-team Charles River with its 100-plus swimmers, but also suffered the "humiliation" of losing to Rhode Island, Jones said. But for the impressive performance of the Midcoast 8, Maine would have fallen to the New York City Bear Cats and others as well, he said.

The more detailed results for area swimmers follow.
