Snow flurries, temperatures near freezing and low water levels — which made navigating parts of the rocky course tricky — greeted the hardy paddlers who participated in the 44th annual Passagassawakeag River Race on Saturday, April 1.

Despite the overall inclement early-spring weather and less-than-ideal water conditions, the 'Passy' attracted 54 craft — including a paddleboard — and 84 paddlers.

The race was the first of two weekend events, hosted by the Waldo County YMCA, to start the whitewater river race season.

The 38th annual St. George River Race was Sunday, April 2, after being postponed from Saturday, March 25 (see separate story, photos and video from that event).

For the 'Passy," Ray Wirth of Monroe, a kayaker, proved the fastest over the course in 49 minutes and 31 seconds. Ben Randall of Sabattus, also a kayaker, was second overall in 50:25.

The fastest canoeists were Jeff and Bucky Owen of Orono in 53:39.

The banks of the river still had plenty of snow and ice from a slew of late-winter storms.

The Passagassawakeag River Race, or "Passy," began on Savage Road at the Littlefield Farm in Waldo.

The first mile was flat water with many curves. The course passed under a cement bridge to another mile of flat water followed by a short stretch of Class II rapids. The course continued with a two-mile stretch of flat water to Rolerson’s bridge, then Class I, II and III whitewater for a mile and a half, which led to a flat water stretch to the finish.

Despite cold, unseasonable late-winter and early-spring weather, it appeared, until recently, the two Waldo County YMCA-sponsored whitewater paddle races would go on as scheduled for consecutive Saturdays in late-March and early-April.

But Mother Nature did not cooperate and the St. George event was postponed a week.
