Regional School Unit 20 directors, who were scheduled to meet April 10 to appoint  an interim superintendent, have since canceled that meeting.

District officials quickly scheduled a meeting meeting for Monday but shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, that meeting was canceled.

Board chairman Tony Bagley said in an email that the meeting to appoint an acting superintendent was not necessary. The appointment was scheduled because the board needed a superintendent to certify the results of a vote to close Stockton Springs Elementary School

On April 7, Bagley said he could not discuss specifics about Downing's absence, citing laws related to protecting an individual's health information. At the time, Bagley said he did not know how long the district will need an interim superintendent.
