The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Belfast Area High School girls tennis team:

Coach/years coached current team: John Cameron, 21st year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 5-7 and 12th in Class B North. The Lions did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Senior Rayahna Luther; juniors Julia Cerone, Alexia Sweet, Kristina Walker, Olivia LaRoche, Samantha Hills, Star Warner and Eliot Ripley; sophomore Allika Kelley; and freshmen Sophia Richdale, Laila Al-Matrouk and Clarisse Stradtman.

Known graduation losses: Lucie Bonneville, Hannah Greene, Dalia Far, Leah Taylor and Ashley Flanders

Significant impact athletes: Luther, Cerone, Sweet, Walker, LaRoche and Kelley.

Team strengths: A positive mix of youth and experience.

Team goals: To improve on last year’s win total and be competitive in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference.

Top league opponents: Camden Hills of Rockport, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Waterville and Morse of Bath.

Outlook: The Lions return five players from last year’s squad, along with Luther, who returns after spending her junior year at Orono High School.

Cameron said the Windjammers, Eagles, Purple Panthers and Shipbuilders will be among the top teams in the conference, with the fact that all four schools have indoor tennis facilities at their disposal being a factor as those schools can allow their student-athletes to play year round. Meanwhile many of the other teams in the KVAC “most times have players that have never touched a racket before, and they are only playing and training during the high school tennis season."

“Our goal this year is to win the matches against schools like ours and be competitive against all the others,” the coach said.
