The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Belfast Area High School softball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Chris Bartlett, 13th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 4-12, 14th in Class B North. The Lions did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Seniors Vanessa Grotton (center field) and Ayla Skidgell (first base); juniors Olivia Lovejoy (second base), Alia Wallace (outfield), Emma Mehuren (third base, first base) and Macy Gale (pitcher, outfield, first base); sophomores Karagen Stone (outfield), Gia Davila (pitcher, outfield) and Maya Cunningham (catcher); and freshmen Kayci Faulkingham (shortstop), Brooke Richards (third base, pitcher) and Grace Fitzjurls (outfield, infield).

Known graduation losses: Mariah Sturgis, Kelci Faulkingham, Anna Simmons, Hannah Nichols and Kelci Dyer.

Significant impact athletes: Grotton, Lovejoy, Gale, Skidgell, Mehuren and Cunningham.

Team strengths: Experience and pitching depth.

Team goals: To improve every day and put ourselves in position to compete in every game.

Top league opponents: Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Gardiner, Winslow, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Leavitt of Turner and Spruce Mountain of Jay.

Outlook: The Lions lost Sturgis — a second team all-conference catcher — to graduation, but the team returns a wealth of experienced players and pitchers. Bartlett said the girls “have really good chemistry together, which is a huge plus.

“We should be in pretty good shape as the year goes on as long as we stay in shape,” he said. “We are athletic, have some speed and some younger players that are hungry. As our pitching rotation settles in I feel we could make a push for the playoffs this year.”
