The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Belfast Area High School baseball team:

Coach/years coached current team: George Ross, 36th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 9-7, ninth in Class B North. The Lions defeated No. 8 Gardiner 2-1 in eight innings in a prelim playoff game and lost to No. 1 Old Town 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

Roster: Seniors Shane Alley (outfield), Zac Sheafe (outfield), Garrett Hamlin (infield), Zack Dyer (pitcher, catcher), Andrew Cross (outfield), Tristan Roberts (infield) and Derrick Tyler (outfield); juniors Alex Newcomb (outfield), Konnor Harford (catcher, outfield), Aaron Fuller (infield), Tyler Bartlett (pitcher, outfield), Skyler Perkins (pitcher, infield) and Grey Dinsmore (pitcher, infield); and sophomores Max Lewis (third base, pitcher) and Luke Hamlin (infield).

Known graduation losses: Brian Lowe, Alex Canning, Alex Flagg, Lucien Gordley-Smith, Brandon Porter, Peter Spectre, Emery Dinsmore and Rick Wyman.

Significant impact athletes: Hamlin and Dyer.

Team strength: Strong core of returning players.

Team goal: To return to the Class B North playoffs.

Top league opponents: Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Morse of Bath and Spruce Mountain of Jay.

Outlook: The Lions graduated eight starters from last year’s squad, several of whom were topnotch contributors, notably Dinsmore, who was a terrific pitcher and Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B first team all-conference selection.

Ross said the Lions likely will be led offensively by Hamlin and Dyer — the top hitters from last season — but “the biggest concern would be our pitching.”

Despite that, the veteran coach feels his team, a seasoned bunch, will be competitive in the league.

“We like this team’s chances of being a solid overall team,” said Ross. “If the pitching is there, we hope to be tough to beat.”
