Police are investigating a crash that killed a 21-year-old man the evening of June 6.

Waldo County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Darrin Moody responded at 8:52 p.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Baker Road. The driver of a blue 2002 Mercury, Blaze McQuate, failed to navigate a sweeping corner and went off the road over an embankment, police said in a news release.

The vehicle sideswiped a utility pole before going airborne and striking a large tree. Mcquate was removed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said no passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, police said.

Sgt. Cody Laite of the sheriff's office is reconstructing the crash.

Police said June 8 that more information about the incident will be released when the investigation is completed.
