Police say a Bucksport man is in the hospital after his vehicle hit a tree late in the morning of June 9.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Waldo County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Nicholas Oettinger and Deputy Jon Shaw, as well as Belfast Fire Department and Ambulance, responded to a single-vehicle crash on Oak Hill Road.

The driver, 18-year-old Garrett Smith, lost control on a sweeping corner to the left as he was driving south, police said. Smith's vehicle traveled off the road and struck a tree with the passenger side of his vehicle, according to information released by Oettinger.

Smith was taken by Lifeflight helicopter to a trauma center. His vehicle sustained significant damage in the crash, police said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
