Fire destroyed a box truck the morning of June 12 on Route 1 in front of Wentworth Family Grocery.

Police said it’s believed a mechanical problem sparked the blaze, which, according to an eye witness, quickly engulfed the vehicle. The driver of the truck, 61-year-old Craig Dandeneau of Westbrook, was able to escape without injury, police said at the scene.

Dandeneau told police he was preparing to make a newspaper and magazine delivery to Wentworth Family Grocery when he noticed smoke pouring from beneath the hood of his box truck, Waldo County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jason Trundy said.

He attempted to turn into the parking lot but lost power steering in the vehicle, Trundy said, and the vehicle came to stop partially blocking an entrance to the store.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 a.m. and traffic was detoured around the area while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

The truck, which is owned by Hudson RPM Distributors, was loaded with magazines and newspapers, police said. Trundy said investigating officers are now working to track down additional information about the vehicle from its owner.

Lincolnville Fire Department assisted Northport firefighters at the scene.
