Regional School Unit 71 voters on June 13 approved a $27.2 million budget for the coming year by a vote of 639-242.

The budget approved at Tuesday's referendum is up 2.5 percent from the current year, owing largely to increases in the costs of salaries and benefits. The overall hike in the budget comes after officials applied $1.5 million saved during the current school year.

The effect on local property taxes hinges on how much state aid comes to the district this year. As of June 13, lawmakers in Augusta had yet to finalize the biennial state budget.

Voter turnout was down roughly 10 percent from last year's June budget referendum.
