With the Babe Ruth District 2 double-elimination playoffs on-deck — and two Midcoast-based teams set to participate in the locally-hosted tournaments — the area squads squared off in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon, July 2 on the Oceanside High School field in the hope of sharpening skills.

The players did just that, but, in the end, the Midcoast 15s showed their ability to score in droves as they posted a 14-8 win over the Midcoast 14s.

The Midcoast 15s will play their first game of their double-elimination tournament on Thursday, July 6 against Coastal North. Apple Valley and Coastal West also will participate.

The Midcoast 14s will play their first game of their double-elimination tournament on Saturday, July 8 against Augusta or Apple Valley. The team’s first game originally was supposed to be on Thursday, July 6 at 9 a.m. against Central Maine, but the latter team pulled out of the tournament, which changed the time of Midcoast’s first game and made it a three-team tournament.

Both tournaments will be at the Oceanside baseball field in Thomaston. The champion of the tournaments will advance to the state events, which will be in Augusta and begin on Thursday, July 13.

In Sunday’s exhibition, the Midcoast 15s scored six runs in the second and fifth innings and one in the fourth and sixth frames, while the Midcoast 14s scored five in the first, two in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Leading the 15s at the plate were Cumming (run, stolen base), Giberson (single, run, stolen base), Crockett (RBI), Perry (run), Murphy (run), Widdecomb (single, 2 runs, RBI), Fillmore (single, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Lewis (single, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, stolen base), Pierpont (single, run, RBI), Stevens (2 runs), Hamlin (run, stolen base) and Payson (single, RBI, stolen base).

For the 14s, Crane (double, run, stolen base), Coombs (single, run, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Sirios (2 runs), Greenleaf (single, 2 runs, stolen base), Curtis (run, 2RBIs), Miller (double, triple, run, 3RBIs), Moody (single, RBI), Pitcher (single), Schecter (double), Belcher (single) and Carlson (stolen base) paced the offense.

Pitching statistics were not kept as the teams used a different pitcher in each inning, at least, in part, due to the fact members of Penobscot Bay Dentistry and Union Farm Equipment have yet to play the Midcoast Babe Ruth League championship game — scheduled for Wednesday, July 5 — and did not want to tire those teams' hurlers.
