The 21st annual New Year’s by the Bay multi-venue “First Night” event is set for Sunday, Dec. 31, from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. in downtown and around Belfast. The yearly grassroots celebration is chem-free, family-oriented, affordable, cultural celebration takes place at primarily indoor venues within walking distance, showcasing a wide variety of live performances as well as several dance bands.

Button it up

White there are several free events, admission to most is by wearing an NYBB 2018 adult or youth/student button. Buttons are on sale now, via PayPal, online at Cost is $20; $5 for youth age 6 to 18; and free for younger children.

Buttons are available for online purchase until noon Dec. 31; the reserved and guaranteed button orders will then be available for pickup at the NYBB HQ — The Parent Gallery, 92 Main St. at the downtown traffic light — between noon to 8 p.m. (bring receipt or ID). Buttons also may be purchased beginning Friday, Dec. 15, at the downtown Parent Gallery and Belfast Co-op; and Fireside Inn & Suite’s Ocean’s Edge, Route 1.


From 2 p.m. to midnight Dec. 31, more than 100 volunteers, teens to senior citizens, will be needed for two-and-a-half hour shifts each to help out with the downtown entertainment venues where the performances take place. It is fun, indoors “work” and each volunteer receives a free NYBB admission button.
