Jayne Crosby Giles of Belfast today announced her candidacy for Maine Senate District 11, which covers all of Waldo County.

Giles, a Republican, is a former Maine legislator who served two terms in the House of Representatives, including as a member of the budget-writing Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.

She is a former community banker and small business lender. More recently, she was CEO of MaineStream Finance, a nonprofit bank with a mission to serve low-to-moderate income borrowers living in rural Maine communities, according to a press release. In 2016, the U.S. Small Business Administration named her as the Financial Services Champion for Maine and all of New England.

Prior to joining MaineStream Finance, Giles was a vice president for commercial banking at Machias Savings Bank. She has more than 30 years of banking experience, including senior roles at Camden National Bank and KeyBank.

“My working life has been dedicated to helping others," Giles said in the press release. "As a community banker and volunteer, my goal has been to help move people forward. These experiences have provided me with the financial knowledge and compassion necessary to help the families and businesses of Waldo County prosper.

“During the past year, I have visited with many people in Waldo County. Hearing their concerns, my focus as state senator will be to help small businesses grow, address the workforce labor shortage, invest more in early childhood education, create greater security for seniors and provide more affordable housing options, particularly for young families.”

Senate District 11 is currently represented by Maine Senate President Michael Thibodeau, R-Waldo, who is unable to run for the seat again because of term limits.

Thibodeau said, “I had the pleasure of serving with Jayne Giles in the Legislature previously, and I can tell you firsthand that she is a problem solver who works effectively across party lines to get things done.

“I cannot think of a better choice to represent Waldo County in the Maine Senate.”

Giles is a lifelong Waldo County resident. She lives in Belfast with her husband, Mike. The couple has three grown children and two grandchildren.

A community kick-off for the “Jayne for Maine” campaign will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7 — Waldo County's 191st birthday — at Waldo County Shrine Club, 20 Northport Ave., Belfast, from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information, call 944-0380 or email jayneformaine@gmail.com.

Democratic Rep. Erin Herbig of Belfast, currently Maine House majority leader, announced Jan. 2 she also is seeking the Senate seat.
