The 2018 high school unified basketball season tipped off for two Midcoast squads — in the same gymnasium — as Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston hit the road to face Mount View of Thorndike on Thursday, Jan. 25.

Now in its fourth season, unified basketball — which combines Special Olympics athletes and general student-athletes (partners) in 5-on-5 competition — has taken the state by storm. In 2015, the state had 18 teams and that number has swelled to 52 this season.

In Thursday’s action, Oceanside posted a 49-44 victory.

The Mariners held a 30-22 halftime lead, while the Mustangs outscored the visitors 22-19 in the second half.

Team members for Oceanside include Kaytlyn Pierce, Ryan Morse, Erica Dyer, Angel Seiders, Ryan Crockett, Ryan Warren, Krista Butler, Titus Kaewthong, Mike Dougherty, Matt Waldron, Casey Pine, Nick Colson, Isaiah Jones and Ashley Sherman.

Team members for Mount View include Brendan Savoy, Justice Savoy, Destiny Winslow, Morgan Taylor, Nick Elkins, Austin Grotton, Alexis Bowman, Derrick Spaulding, Leah Bradstreet and Mike Lamkins.

Seiders netted 18 points to pace Oceanside, while Pierce added 12; Warren, eight; Crockett, five; and Dyer, Kaewthong and Dougherty, two.

Elkins led Mount View with 14 points, while Justice Savoy and Grotton added 12; and Brendan Savoy, Winslow and Lamkins, two.

Oceanside’s first season was in 2015, while Mount View joined the ranks in 2017.
