Brian Kresge of Winterport today announced that he has dropped his bid to represent the 2nd Congressional District as a Libertarian, and will run instead as a Republican to represent the 98th District (Frankfort, Searsport, Swanville and Winterport) in the Maine Legislature.

Rep. James Gillway, who currently holds the seat, will not be running again because of term limits.

After meeting with Waldo County Republicans and constituents throughout the district, Kresge said in a statement released this morning:

“I still believe in libertarianism, and the Maine and Waldo County GOP are a good place for that. Michael Cunningham, chairman of the Waldo County Republican Party, has shown me, through the efforts of the Waldo County committee and its numerous volunteers, that there is a strong team working toward the same ends already.

"It’s going to take a team to build our regional economy," he said, "and with so many of our termed-out leaders leaving in the midst of some very exciting work, we need fresh people in the Legislature to continue their good work.”

Kresge, a veteran and a member of the Maine Army National Guard, said he would be "proud to continue the work of Rep. James Gillway, working in tandem with former Rep. Jayne Giles, who seeks to take over Sen. Thibodeau’s good work in the state Senate.”

“The people of Swanville, Searsport, Winterport, and Frankfort deserve no gap in superior representation,” he said.

Of his plans if elected, Kresge said, “I’d especially like to work in the Legislature to increase the viability of STEM education in Maine, giving our youth a promise of a future here in Maine, and not in other states. I want to continue Representative Gillway’s work on the Maine Ocean School in Searsport. At the same time, incentivizing flourishing businesses in Waldo County will be a top priority. We have the work ethic and the considerable talent to build great things here."

Kresge works out of his Winterport home as a programmer and writer for Pennsylvania-based accounting and technology firm RKL CPA, LLC, and its subsidiary, RKL eSolutions LLC. His wife, Leah, is director of education for Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor. Their daughter, Amelia, attends school in Regional School Unit 22.
