Belfast resident Carmine Pecorelli is enlisting the participation of other area veterans in a funeral service Wednesday, Feb. 21, for a fellow veteran who has died without survivors.

According to an email message from Scott R. Brown, superintendent of the Maine Veterans' Cemetery System, Warren D. Goodwin died Jan. 10 at Mid-Coast Hospital. Acting on behalf of the Maine adjunct general, Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, Brown claimed Goodwin's remains for burial.

Goodwin, a U.S. Navy seaman first class during World War II, served from June 1943 to February 1946, when he was honorably discharged. His funeral service, with Navy honors, will be Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at the State of Maine Veterans' Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Burial will be in the Niche Wall at the Civic Center Drive Cemetery.

Pecorelli said the funeral will include military flags, a 21-gun salute and Taps. He also plans to take a bagpiper, Alan Baker of Brewer, to play for the service. He invites members of the Belfast Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and any other veterans and active military to attend.
