While the coed state Class B wrestling championships played out on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Wells High School, it was the females' turn a mere two days later as high school-aged girls from throughout the state converged on Marshwood Middle School for their own state championships on Monday, Feb. 19.

Freshmen identical twin sisters Morgan and Emma Fonger of Mount View participated in the event, a scenario that saw Emma finish second overall in the 125-pound weight class with a 2-1 record, while Morgan went 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament.

The duo faced mat athletes from Westbrook, Bucksport, Oak Hill of Sabattus and Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, while other schools also were represented at the day-long event.

Team scores were not kept.

The following is a breakdown of the siblings' performances on the mats:

115 pounds — M. Fonger lost to Anunthaya McDonnell, West, 11-5; pinned Magnolia St. Germain, OaH; and was pinned by Kiah Wilson, Buck.

125 pounds — E. Fonger pinned Gabby Theriault, Mat; pinned Abby Hanscom, Buck; and lost to Zoe Buteau, OaH, 13-0, in the championship final. E. Fonger finished second.

The two are sisters of Sierra Fonger, a former Mount View wrestler who now competes on the mat in college.
