The opportunity to become a soccer referee is on the horizon, with a two-day course offered in the Midcoast.

The classes will gain one official certification and allow one to referee games played under United States Soccer Federation (USSF) rules. There are different requirements if one would like to referee high school or college games.

The course is being offered at the PITCH on Saturday, March 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, March 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The course will cover the rules of the game, the mechanics of how to referee and how to get assignments.

This course will be an grade eight course — which is the starting grade — and will cost $115. The season for club (USSF) soccer is mainly in the spring and fall, and the games are played locally. There will be opportunities, as referees become more experienced, to go up in grade and to do more challenging games further afield.

If one has questions they can email Stephen Peats at Sign-up and introductory learning modules are online. Sign-up online can be achieved by going to and following the link to referee, and then new release classes.
