While the Mount View girls basketball team managed only six wins on the season, the Mustangs picked up another "victory" on the court on Friday, March 2 at the state Class B basketball championships.

Prior to the girls championship game between Winslow and Lake Region at the Cross Insurance Center Friday night, the Mustang girls were honored with the Maine Principals’ Association Class B North Good Sportsmanship Banner.

The assembled herd of Mustangs collected their banner in front of a large crowd, which would later watch the Black Raider girls — who began the season with a seven-point win over Mustangs on Dec. 8 — defeat Lake Region to win their first state championship since 2005 with a 43-29 victory.

"I am beyond excited and proud of the girls for winning the 2018 Class B North Sportsmanship award,” said Mount View coach Mark Cooper. “I actually have the banner hanging up in my classroom. That is until our [athletic director] Chris Moreau confiscates it to proudly display in our gym. The girls have worked very hard this season.  They have taken ownership of their team and their program. We have preached the culture of family since this past summer and how important it is. This team award is the justification we have been working for as a program."

Players Gabby Hanks, Alex Fountain, Lydia Bryant, Paula Miller, Miranda Carpentier, Andrea Crosby, Kate Bennett, Jennifer Littlefield, Mackenzie Schofield, Sophia King, Sage Cassidy, Kaylan Anderson and Shala Davis, along with coaches Mark Cooper, Erin Bennett-Wade, Jim Bohn and Raymond Sprague, were all on hand to accept the banner.
