The Regional School Unit 71 board of directors will hold a public meeting Thursday, March 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Belfast Area High School to discuss school safety in light of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and other threats toward schools.

The meeting will take place the day after a planned walkout at the high school to protest for gun control regulations. An alternative forum hosted by the Young Republicans inside the school will coincide with the protest. A notice of the two events posted on the district's website stated that the position of the school and the district on gun control is "neutral and respectful of all student and community perspectives."

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the March 15 meeting, which was rescheduled from an earlier date to avoid conflicts with other local events.
