Despite unseasonably cold weather conditions — with temperatures hovering near 20 and brisk, biting wind — nearly 60 runners and walkers celebrated St. Patrick's Day and three days before the official start of spring as they made the 3.1-mile trek around the south side of the city during annual Trackside Station "Lucky Leprechaun" 5-kilomter road race on Saturday morning, March 17.

And those who led the way were no strangers to the first-place spotlights as Keith Drago, 30, of Rockland blistered the course — and competition — with an impressive time of 16:48.7. He outdistanced the field by more than three minutes — which, essentially, is a lifetime in 5K road races.

Windham Veevaert finished as the runner-up in 19:58.9 and Cory Johnson was third at 20:55.8. Jala Tooley, 38, of Camden was the first female finisher in 21:12.9, fourth overall.

Many dressed in green, of course, to represent the day. One of those was Janet O'Brian, who wore mostly green, with only socks and sneakers being a different color. She also ran with a canine friend.

The event was another in a series of races hosted by the non-profit One Community Many Voices organization.

One Community Many Voices, OCMV, is a 501c(3) charitable organization, located in Rockland. Using a model called: the Art of Good Fellowship – Paying it Forward One Neighbor at a Time – OCMV provides gap funding when no other resources are available to help neighbors in need resolve a hardship related to employment/skill building, youth aspirations, elderly independent living or well-being.
