The first of two straight weekends of youth basketball at the Waldo County YMCA kicked off with the third- and fourth-graders in the spotlight Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18.

And when the final games of the second annual Lion's Den Classic had been played, the Belfast girls and Norridgewock boys had netted championships.

The four-team girls tournament included Belfast, Coastal Pirates, Lincoln and Winterport Dolphins.

Belfast included Trysdan Galvin, Mylee Henderson, Jordyn Kneeland, Gracie Moore, Alanna Nichols, Mya Oliphant, Mady Pinham, Jaliza Richards, Julianna Sprague, Emma Tripp, Payton Wadsworth and Bri Weaver. The coaches were Jojo Oliphant and Kyle Tripp.

Winterport included Brooke Burke, Lillian Connors, Mia Curtis, Skylar DaSilva, Madison Densmore, Addison Elliot, Madelyn Hardy, Anne Jordan, Hannah Littlefield, Mariah Robbins and Makayla Shaw. The coaches were Jen Littlefield and Heather Shaw.

The seven-team boys tournament included Belfast, Auburn, Brewer, Ellsworth Connors, Ellsworth Parks, Husson Junior Eagles and Norridgewalk.

Belfast, which had two teams listed in the tourney's official program but appeared to combine players from both to form one team, included Shane Carson, Jeremiah Cole, Cole Gerrish, Aiden Howard, Luke Littlefield, Ben Milliken, Adam Robson, Caden Sturgeon, Alden Stutheit, Jason Thurston, Brendan Kelley, Colton Luce, Connor Faulkingham and Jackson Faukingham. The coaches were among Zane Cole, Todd McLeod, Colton Luce and Nick Faukingham.

In the girls hot shot competition, Lincoln's Juliana Cloukey won with 47 points, while Belfast's Julianna Sprague finished runner-up with 44 points.

In the boys hot shot competition, Norridgewock's Kaden Pelletier won with 44 points, while Belfast's top competitor was Adam Robson at 27.

There were seven girls games and 14 boys court affairs.

In the girls tournament, with all games played Saturday, Belfast beat Winterport, Coastal beat Lincoln, Belfast beat Coastal, Lincoln beat Winterport, Coastal beat Winterport, Lincoln beat Coastal and Belfast beat Lincoln.

In the championship game, Belfast defeated Lincoln 16-8, as Kneeland tallied nine points; Moore, Oliphant and Richards, two; and Nichols, one. Brooklyn Raymond scored six points and Megan House two for Lincoln.

In the boys tournament, with games Saturday and Sunday, Husson beat Ellsworth Parks, Auburn beat Husson, Brewer beat Belfast, Norridgewock beat Ellsworth Connors, Norridgewock beat Brewer, Norridgewock beat Auburn, Ellsworth Parks beat Belfast, Ellsworth Parks beat Husson, Ellsworth Connors beat Husson, Brewer beat Belfast, Ellsworth Connors beat Brewer, Ellsworth Parks beat Ellsworth Connors, Auburn beat Ellsworth Parks and Norridgewock beat Auburn.

In the championship game, Norridgewock downed Auburn 42-21, as Adam Fitzgerald tossed in 14 points; Kaden Pelletier, eight; and Bryson Saucer, Jack Fitzpatrick, Josh Fitzgerald, Trevor Austin and Thomas Herbert, four.

For Auburn, Akol Maiwen tallied nine points; Kai Taylor, six; and Ian Cyr and Max Kimble, two.

Next weekend, Friday through Sunday, March 23-25, Waldo County YMCA will host its fifth- and sixth-grade tourney for boys and girls at two locations. The girls tourney will be at the YMCA and the boys at the YMCA and Captain Albert Stevens School in Belfast.

The Belfast girls will play their first game on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Belfast boys play their first game on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Waldo County YMCA, but boys action switches to Captain Albert Stevens School on Saturday and Sunday.
