A roadside trash cleanup is in the planning stages, set for Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12. Organizers aim to clean every road in Belfast.

An initial meeting of about a dozen organizers and prospective participants was held March 12. Event sponsors include John Gibbs and The Front Street Pub, Belfast Parks and Recreation, Our Town Belfast, the City of Belfast, and many local organizations, individuals, and businesses.

Businesses, churches, service clubs, civic groups, scouts, parent-teacher organizations and individuals are all welcome to join the effort. Anyone interested in participating can visit the Facebook page for Keeping Belfast Maine Beautiful to register and stay up to date with developments.

The next meeting of those interested in helping with the cleanup effort will take place at City Hall Monday, March 26, at 6 p.m.

The preliminary event schedule is:

​Friday, May 11, schools, organizations, scouts, large groups, noon to 4 p.m.

Saturday, May 12, all other volunteers meet at 7 a.m. for doughnuts, coffee and assignments; head out to assigned areas at 8 a.m. Noon: Clean-up ends with cookout.

Rain Date: May 18-19.

Gathering place: ​​Front Street/Harborwalk parking lot (old Maskers lot).

Needs:​ Markers, flags for (special) trash. Garbage bags and clear (or different colored) bags for recyclables. Gloves, EZ tents, grills, cones, neon orange shirts, food.
