Join Seth Benz for a naturalist hike at Midcoast Conservancy’s Bog Brook Preserve in Montville Saturday, April 28, from 8 to 10 a.m.

Along with the enjoyment of avian sights and sounds, this field trip will teach participants how to use eBird and iNaturalist apps. These are tools for contributing to citizen science and helping to combat climate change.

Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and smart phones with the eBird and iNaturalist apps already uploaded. Be prepared for wet conditions. The event will be held rain or shine.

Following several decades in the fields of conservation science and education, Seth Benz is now the Schoodic Institute’s director of bird ecology. He is responsible for coordinating biodiversity research, conducting citizen science phenology and migration monitoring efforts, and developing bird ecotourism programs.

Benz formerly worked with National and Maine Audubon as well as Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and as a former interpretive ranger at Acadia National Park. He coordinates citizen scientists’ efforts to monitor bird migrations, pelagic seabird concentrations, and biodiversity observations in the Acadia Region.

Benz also leads natural history tours in partnership with Maine Birding Trail’s Bob Duchesne.
