Lois G. Merchant joined the angels March 26, 2018, at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. She was born Sept. 7, 1935, at Beals Island, the daughter of Ulysses W. and Gladys M. (Bell) Merchant.

Lois graduated from Beals High School. She moved to Belfast at the age of 23 and went to work at Maplewood Poultry where she remained until it closed. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Hampden until she retired. Lois kept busy with her VFW Auxiliary 6131 of Northport, which she thought of as family. She was an excellent mentor. She became a life member on Aug. 12, 2007. Lois had been a patient at Tall Pines for the past year. She enjoyed the company of many former workers. Bingo was the highlight of her day. She loved her Red Sox, music and the Celtics.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Morrill, Sidney and James Merchant.

Lois is survived by her brother, Rev. Jesse Merchant Sr. and wife Bettina of Jonesport; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend, Nellie "Betty" Farris as well as all her sisters and brothers from VFW, and many friends. She loved the joy found in young children.

Thank you to the caregivers at Tall Pines, doctors and nurses at Waldo County Hospital as well as Hospice services.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at the Northport VFW with a reception to follow.

Those who wish may make donations in Lois' memory to VFW Auxiliary 6131, c/o Patricia Littlefield, 1360 Atlantic Highway, Northport. Memories and condolences may be shared at ripostafh.com.
