The Friends of Fort Knox has seasonal positions open for volunteers to help present the historic fort to visitors. Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory are open every day from May 1 until Oct. 31.

The Friends manage Fort Knox under a lease agreement with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and staff the observatory through a contract, with the Maine Department of Transportation.

Positions include helping in the gift shop, observatory attendants, special event assistance and providing interpretive tours for visitors. Volunteers will receive training, must be at least aged 18 and able to help one or two, half-days per week.

Fort Knox was constructed between 1844 and 1869 and is among the best-preserved 19th century forts in the United States. The Penobscot Narrows Observatory is the tallest bridge observatory open to the public in the world. The Fort and observatory attract over 100,000 visitors each year.

The Friends of Fort Knox is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the Fort and enhance its cultural, educational and economic value for the people of Maine.
