The Belfast baseball and softball teams, a bit behind other teams throughout the state, finally got their respective seasons underway on Monday, April 23 as the Lions hit the road to face Erskine Academy.

The Waldo County teams emerged with a split on the afternoon as the softball squad posted a 4-2 win in extra innings, while the baseball team fell 5-2 to the Eagles.

The following is a recap of reported results:


Belfast 4, Erskine Academy 2 (8 inns.)

At South China April 23, the Lions plated a pair of runs in the eighth inning and prowled past the Eagles. Belfast also scored runs in the first and third innings, while both of Erskine Academy’s tallies came in the fourth frame.

Leading the Lions at the plate were Olivia Lovejoy (3 singles, 3 runs), Maya Cunningham (double, single, run, 2 RBIs), Brooke Richards (single, RBI), Macy Gale (single) and Kayci Faulkingham (double).

For the Eagles, Madison Boynton (single), Summer Hotham (single, run), MaKenzie Strout (run) and Kayla Hodgkins (RBI) paced the offense.

Hodgkins pitched for Erskine Academy, allowing eight hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts. Richards pitched for Belfast, allowing two hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts.

The opponents were tied 2-2 heading into the eighth inning before Lovejoy singled, stole second base and came in on an double by Cunningham — who moments later was plated on an hit by Richards — to put the visitors up 4-2.

The Eagles were able to get a baserunner aboard via a walk in the bottom of the frame, but could not get the tying run on base.


Erskine Academy 5, Belfast 2

At South China April 23, the Eagles soared past the visiting Lions. Belfast scored one run in the second and seventh innings, while Erskine Academy scored two in the third and three in the fifth.

Leading the Lions at the plate were Tyler Bartlett (RBI), Dakota Payson (hit), Luke Hamlin (2 hits, run), Jason Bartlett (hit), Tanner Veilleux (run) and Chris Kelley (hit, RBI).

For the Eagles, Sage Hadgood-Belanger (2 hits, 2 runs), Chandler Moore (hit, 2 RBIs), Bjorn Jorgensen (hit, run), Joseph Clark (hit, RBI) and Caden Turcotte (2 hits, 2 runs) paced the offense.

Grey Dinsmore pitched for Belfast, allowing seven hits and no walks, with six strikeouts. Moore and Turcotte pitched for Erskine Academy, allowing five hits and six walks, with five strikeouts.
