Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School is accepting applications for the Young Stars of Maine Prize Program; the postmark deadline is Friday, May 11. From these applications, several students will be invited for live auditions, to be held June 2 at the Bay Chamber Music School.

For more than 50 years, Bay Chamber Concerts has awarded prizes to Maine students who have made a significant commitment to their musical studies. Young Stars of Maine prizewinners have gone on to careers at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as major symphonies and conservatories throughout the world. In addition to the prize monies, Young Stars are invited to perform for the public in a free concert, scheduled for June 17.

Prize awards are $1,000, in seven categories, for individuals or jazz ensembles between ages 12 and 25, as follows. The Eleanor Erdman and Diane Nixon Vocal Excellence Prize is open to solo vocalists age 12 to 25. The A. H. Chatfield Jr. Piano Prize is open to solo pianists age 14 to 22. The Summer Music Strings Prize is open to string soloists age 15 to 24. The Jean and Harvey Picker Senior Prize is open to instrumental or vocal soloists age 18 to 22. The Elsie Bixler Junior Prize is open to instrumental soloists age 12 to 17. The Ezra Rachlin Prize for Excellence is open to instrumental or vocal soloists age 16 to 25. The Nathan E. Corning Jazz Prize is open to instrumental or vocal soloists or groups age 15 to 23.
