Avian enthusiasts will celebrate local and migratory birds May 12-19 during Cathy Morgan Bird Week, sponsored by Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition.

Events include six morning bird walks, each starting at 7 a.m. Participants are encouraged to wear tick-repellent clothing and to please leave pets at home. The events are:

Saturday, May 12, walk Sears Island, Searsport; Sunday, May 13, paddle and bird Upper Mason Pond, Swan Lake Avenue, Belfast; Monday, May 14, Head of Tide Preserve, Doak Road, Belfast; Tuesday, May 15, Thanhauser-Chunn Farm, 210 Oak Hill Road, Swanville; Wednesday, May 16, Ducktrap River, Lincolnville; Thursday, May 17, In-Town Nature Trail, meet at The Muck in Belfast; Friday, May 18, Rocky Knoll Tract of Meadow Brook Preserve, Oak Hill Road, Swanville; Saturday, May 19, Hauk-Fry Tract of Meadow Brook Preserve, Oak Hill Road, Swanville.

On Monday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a Woodcock Party at the Thanhauser-Chunn farm, 210 Oak Hill Road, Swanville.

Mike Shannon will regale participants with facts and lore about woodcock over refreshments while they wait for the setting sunlight to be just right. Then birders will walk out into a hay field to watch the males do their courtship dance and flight, giving their best performance to impress females who watch from around the field edges. Dress warmly for a chilly evening.
