Five 5k race directors have combined forces to share event promotion and participation for events throughout the summer. Waldo County YMCA, Coastal Mountains Land Trust and Belfast Rotary have staged events previously, with newcomer PAWS joining the series this year.

Registration is now open for the five events, which are meant to encourage participation, wellness and fun — they are timed events and there are top age-group winners, but the style of the events is "inclusive and relaxed," according to a news release. The first race is Saturday, May 26.

The combined group has established a website, RunBelfast.org for registration information, and online preregistration is now open. Participants must register for each event separately, but once an individual has established an account with Active.com, it will be easy to add from the line-up.

Spread from May through October with a break in September, there is something for everyone with 1-mile, 5k, 5-mile and 10k events.

The five events include: PAWS Animal Adoption Center 5k and 1-mile family fun walk on the Belfast Rail Trail, May 26; Coastal Mountains Land Trust 5k and 5-mile runs on the Belfast Rail Trail, June 2; Belfast Rotary runs, the Kilted Canter 5k July 21 and the Bug Run 5k Aug. 18; and Waldo County YMCA Pancake Triple Stack (1-mile, 5k and 10k), Oct 7.

Registration at RunBelfast.org for the PAWS event is $25 for the 5k run. For the 1-mile family fun walk, the registration fee is $15 for ages 13 and older and $5 for ages 12 and younger.

The series is sponsored by Damariscotta Bank & Trust with assistance and support from the city of Belfast.
