Healing & Expressive Arts Retreats of Maine presents a “Raise the Vibration with West African Drumming” workshop on Tuesday, May 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 46 Elm St. in Bucksport.

Learn how to raise positive energy vibrations using the rhythms and techniques of West African hand-drumming, led by sound healing guide and drummer Eileen Mielenhausen. The drumming workshop is open to adults of all skill levels, although geared more to beginner hand-drummers.

There also will be time to improvise in a sound healing “drum jam.” Bring a djembe or ashiko if you have one; some extra drums and percussive instruments will be available to share.

No prior drumming experience is needed. Cost of the program is $20 for registration by May 12. Space is limited; preregistration is requested. To register or for more information, contact Eileen at 441-2785 or eileen.mielenhausen@gmail.com, or visit beaminglightcoaching.com.

Mielenhausen has studied with and played and performed with Edgard Gnidehoue (from the Ivory Coast), Ubaka Hill, Judy Nielsen and members of Inanna, Sisters of Rhythm, Layne Redmond, Barbara Gail, Abdoulaye Sylla and Sayon Camara (from Guinea).

She has facilitated drum circles since 1997 and has offered hand drumming lessons and exploration to a variety of individuals and groups, including children, seniors, cancer survivors, inmates, and people in addiction recovery.

Recognizing the power of the drum for healing, Mielenhausen has coordinated numerous 8,000 Sacred Drums ceremonies and other gatherings in central and coastal Maine.
