Owners of electric vehicles now can top up in downtown Belfast at a new electric car charging station recently installed in the Beaver Street public parking lot.

The City Council in April accepted the charging station from A Climate to Thrive, a grant-funded community group based on Mount Desert Island. The group offered to reimburse the city for the cost of the equipment, while the city will cover the cost of electricity for drivers of electric vehicles. The parking space remains open to other vehicles with a 15-minute time limit.

At the time of its approval, the council roundly supported the idea as a step in the right direction for the environment, and one that additionally might bring visitors to downtown businesses; however, they divided on the details.

Councilor John Arrison said he couldn't support giving free fuel to some drivers and not others. He and Councilor Mary Mortier voted against it.
