Four Belfast high school players — two boys and two girls — looked to take one step closer to an individual state championship at the Maine Principals’ Association state singles tennis qualifiers on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12 at various sites throughout the state.

When the dust settled, Lion Eli Jolliffe was on the prowl as he emerged from the qualifier and played into the state singles tennis tournament, which will be Friday and Saturday, May 25-26 at Deering Oaks Park in Portland.

The semifinals and finals of the state singles tennis tournament will be on Monday, May 28 at Bates College in Lewiston.

There are four regions throughout the state, as players fom Belfast participated in Region 2. The boys matches were held in Brewer and the girls matches in Bangor.

The following is a breakdown of each Lion player's run in the qualifier, with information on the Round of 48 matches included where available:


In the preliminary round, Eli Jolliffe beat Jinyi Wei, John Bapst, 8-1; and beat Tai Boss, Orono, 6-3, 6-0.

Thus, Jolliffe advances to the Round of 48, where he will face Micah Charette of Maranacook on Friday, May 25 at 8:30 a.m. at Deering Oaks Park. The winner will advance to face No. 9 Quinn Clarke of Portland on Friday, May 25 at 2 p.m., also at Deering Oaks.

In the prelims, Rudi Schnetzer beat Samuel Tracy, 8-0; and lost to Elliot Small, Hampden Academy, 6-2, 6-1. Thus, Schnetzer failed to qualify.


In the prelims, Alexia Sweet beat Hannah Johnston, Schenck, 8-4; and lost to Elise Linn, Hampden Academy, 0-6, 1-6. Thus, Sweet failed to qualify.

In the prelims, Julia Cerone lost to Mckenna Porter, Brewerm 2-8. Thus, Cerone failed to qualify.
