Gerry Atwell, 85, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2018, surrounded by his family. Gerry was born in Framingham, Mass., the son of Lawrence Atwell and Claramae Curtis Atwell.

As soon as he was able to walk Gerry was drawn to the wild; he was often found catching creatures in the woods and bringing them home, much to the chagrin of his mother. He discovered his life’s work once he learned that he could have a career with wildlife. “I thought that was pretty neat!”

Throughout his career he worked as a wildlife biologist in Alaska, Montana, New England and the Philippine Islands. Gerry also served proudly in our military.

In 1984 Gerry married the love of his life, Lynda McLaughlin, with whom he enjoyed traveling and “prospecting” at yard sales. Gerry was a faithful member of the Searsmont Methodist Church and he volunteered as a Big Brother and with the Boy Scouts.

Gerry leaves his loving wife, Lynda Atwell, four children and their spouses and children: Lisa Atwell, of Washington state, and her daughters, Kylee and Akasia Traynor; Laurie Sivonen of Saco, her husband Tarik Sivonen and their daughter Brigit Sivonen; Lisa Sawyer of Charleston, Maine, and her husband Joe Sawyer; Bill McLaughlin of Kingston, Mass., and his partner Terri Almeida.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Searsmont United Methodist in Searsmont.  Online condolences may be left at ripostafh.com.
