The final regular-season games for the Searsport baseball and softball teams did not go exactly as planned or hoped, but now the Vikings turn their attention to the postseason — and, perhaps, as history has shown, long playoff runs.

Viking fans know that can happen because the SDHS baseball team is the three-time defending state Class D champion

The end of the month of May brought with it the end of the regular season for the Vikings.

The Vikings had two final regular-season home games against Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln on Wednesday, May 30, before the “win-or-go-home” mentality sets in, but the Lynx proved to be too quick for Searsport, as the visitors took both games, 6-3 in baseball and 7-1 in softball.

The Lynx baseball team brought home three runs in the top of the eighth inning to down the Vikings in extra innings, after Searsport tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Despite the losses, the Vikings head to the playoffs in Class D South — and will host early postseason games.

In the final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South baseball, Searsport (10-6, 118.5156 points) finished first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

The Vikings will host No. 8 Forest Hills of Jackman (5-8) on Wednesday, June 6 at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinal playoff game. Searsport did not play the Tigers during the regular season.

In the final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class D South softball, Searsport (8-8, 75.7500 points) finished fourth, while Greenville (15-1, 146.6183 points) finished first in the 10-team region. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs.

The Vikings will host No. 5 Vinalhaven-North Haven (7-5) on Tuesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. in a quarterfinal playoff game. Searsport did not play the islanders during the regular season.
