Mac Smith, author of “Mainers on the Titanic,” will speak at the Prospect Community Center Monday, June 11, at 7 p.m.

His book traces the stories of passengers on that fateful ship who had ties to Maine. Some were wealthy summer visitors to Mount Desert Island, but there were many other full-time state residents aboard the ship.

The book details the agonizing wait of Mainers for news of what really happened to their loved ones aboard. It tells the stories of Maine passengers from their boarding to the sinking, rescue and arrival back in the country, and, for those who did not survive, their final coming ashore in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A Navy veteran of the First Gulf War and former news reporter for the Bar Harbor Times, Smith lives in Stockton Springs, in the village of Sandy Point, where he is restoring the family homestead.

This program is presented by the Prospect Historical Society. There will be a brief organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. The Community Center is located at 959 Bangor Road (Route 1A). For more information, call 567-3170.
