The Black Bear North third- and fourth-grade girls basketball team again had a top-tier finish in the high-profile Zero Gravity Nationals on Saturday and Sunday, June 2-3.

BBN finished 4-0 in pool play and advanced to the finals before falling to Lady Rivals of Massachusetts 39-23 in the title game to finish second.

In previous games, Black Bear North beat Mass. Elite 14-8, East Side Escalades 28-16, Metro West Swarm 30-11 and Cap City Basketball 30-6.

Led by coach Howard Fogg, team members include Sydney Mason of Lamoine, Kaylee Bagley of Hancock, Julianna Sprague of Searsport, Maddison Cronkite of Rockport, Brenna Odone of Appleton Village, Carley Andrews of Bangor and Elizabeth Boles of Ellsworth.

Fogg said his girls "stayed very competitive and played well as a team."

"It was close with about eight minutes to go in the game," said Fogg of Black Bear North's showdown with Lady Rivals. "And then the other team hit almost every shot toward the end of the game. Overall we played well. I think we got tired after playing four very good games. It was a new dimension for us to have a team 'hit us in the mouth' and we will be better overall because of it."

Black Bear North is 15-1 overall in its travel team season — with the June 3 title game at the Zero Gravity Nationals being the team's first loss — as it also won the American Athletic Union (AAU) third- and fourth-grade state championship in April, among other tourneys.
