Two cars narrowly avoided a head-on collision on Route 3 at the Belmont-Belfast line, Thursday, July 19, at about 2:52 p.m.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, a blue Toyota Prius driven by 80-year-old Phyllis Beck of Needham, Mass., was heading east toward Belfast, when it crossed the center line and sideswiped a black Volkswagen Jetta, driven by John Beeler, 36, of Lewiston, who was heading west.

Beeler and his passenger, 30-year-old Brian R. Beaulieu, were not injured in the crash. Beck also did not report any injuries and was not treated by Belfast Ambulance.

The crash report states Beeler tried to avoid the car but could not. The impact spun Beeler's car around, which came to rest facing east on a lawn in front of a house.

The driver behind the black Volkswagen said there was "debris flying up everywhere" and it was "totally unexpected."

Beeler said, "I thought she was going around something … but she kept coming."

Waldo County Sheriff's Lt. Matthew Curtis said no charges were filed.

Belfast Fire Department also responded to the call.
