After Boston Latin School and Harvard, Marshall learned to meditate and to garden. Rev. Shohaku Okumura, a Soto Zen teacher and the Vipassana Meditation Center, also in western Mass., were big teachers for him, as he learned to keep body and mind connected.

Muscular Dystrophy (FSH) weakened his muscles and cancer of the skin spread to shorten his life. His friends and Crossings (national support network) eased his finale, after home hospice, facilitated by Beacon Hospice. Drs. Kevin Stephens and Tim Hughes helped Marshall to manage.

He was born in Boston, Feb. 17, 1947, and is survived by his wife Carolyn Pressley, brother-in-law Sam Pressley, sister Brenda Novoson,  her husband George and large family, and brother Mel Mittnick and partner Clair Villeneuve.
