Thomas Whittier Calderwood, 84, died July 30, 2018, in Belfast.

Tom was born in Bangor on Oct. 20, 1932, the son of Samuel Henry Calderwood and Frances Palmer. He attended Bangor High School, where he played football, and the University of Maine at Orono until 1952 when he enlisted in the Army.

Tom married Martha Eleanor Whitney of Augusta in June 1956, meeting her while she was caring for his grandmother. They lived in Bangor where he worked in the insurance industry and was very active in the community. He was a member of the Bangor Jaycees and the Bangor Rotary Club, serving as president of both. He was a member of All Souls Congregational Church where he served as a Trustee and a Deacon.

When Tom moved to Searsport, he joined the First Congregational Church and served as a Deacon. He was an EMT with the volunteer Ambulance Service, eventually becoming the director. He also served as fire chief. Tom was elected to the school board and served as the town’s health officer.

Tom shared a love of sailing with his father, Sam, on Penobscot Bay and participating in the annual Friendship Sloop races aboard the Blackjack under the direction of Captain William Pendleton.

He is survived by wife his wife of 62 years, Martha Whitney Calderwood; daughters Hope and Jane, both of Brunswick; son Todd; daughter-in-law Michele Zinn and grandsons Samuel Thomas and Benjamin Wayne, of Hinsdale, N.H. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Burns, her husband Richard, and numerous nieces and nephews.
