Dorothy M. Spates died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, in Belfast. She was born May 19, 1923, in Chester, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Dr. Lloyd and Myrtle Croft of Chester. Dorothy entered nurses training at the Halifax NS Infirmary in 1941. After nurses training, she married Paul Spates of Baltimore. They lived in Nova Scotia until 1957, and then moved to Wolfeboro, N.H., where they built a vacation rental business, The Country Squire Cottages. Dorothy and Paul retired to Belfast in 1970, and then moved to Searsport in 1993.

Dorothy was the beloved wife of Paul S. Spates, the mother of Pamela Sothern and her husband John of Bellevue, Wash., and Jillian Newman and her husband Don of Charlestown, Mass., as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy enjoyed skiing, golf, sailing and spending time with her friends .

Her service will be private, at a later date in Chester, Nova Scotia.
