Fire crews responded to a call for a possible wildfire early Thursday morning, Aug. 16, that destroyed a mobile home, according to Fire Chief Andrew Webster.

The call came in around 5:20 a.m., Webster said, and when firefighters arrived the fire had spread to the home at 86 Turnpike Road.

No injuries were reported, but the home is a total loss.

Webster said it's possible the cause of the fire was a lightning strike but the state Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating.

The Department of Environmental Protection was called in to pump out the home fuel oil tank, which toppled over.

Webster said the Water District recently updated the water main lines on Route 1, which "definitely helped."

Fire Marshal's Office Investigator Jeremy Damren said Thursday morning the cause of fire remains undetermined but said he intends to continue investigating throughout the day.

The owner of the property is listed in town records as Wayne Gardiner, but it is unclear whether he or anyone else was at the home at the time of the fire.

Crews from Searsport, Stockton Springs, Belfast and Frankfort responded.
