Unfortunately, the much-anticipated Antiques Appraisal scheduled for Oct. 8 has been cancelled. There is no reschedule date for this event at the moment.

This is a friendly reminder that back taxes for 2016 should be paid off before January. They will go to foreclosure if not paid. Taxes for 2018 are due by Oct. 31. Interest will start accruing Nov. 1.

The next free rabies clinic through the Waldo County Human Society will be Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Brooks Fire Station from 9 to 11 a.m. New dog tags will be available at the Town Office sometime in mid-October. Dogs should be registered by Dec. 31; the $25 late fee starts Feb. 1. I do need to see your rabies certificate upon registering. If your dog has been neutered or spayed, bring the paperwork on that, as well, if you haven’t shown it to me already.

The Town Office will be closed Friday, Oct. 5. Fall cleanup will be Saturday, Oct. 6 ― have your stuff curbside before 7 a.m. The next election will take place Nov. 6 in the Fire House, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. We will be closing the office as usual for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, Nov. 22 and 23; please plan accordingly.

Community Center Events

Every Wednesday at 1 p.m., the Community Club hosts a coffee time, all residents welcomed. The last Community Supper for the season will be Saturday, Oct. 13. The Hunters’ Breakfast is tentatively set for Saturday, Nov. 3, 5 to 9 a.m., weather permitting.

What is a Homestead Exemption and who qualifies? Homestead Exemption is a program that gives a certain amount off the value of your residence, which in turn lowers your principal balance due for taxes. The qualification is simple: You have to have owned the property for at least 12 months and have made it your permanent place of residence. This means you occupy this residence, it is a true fixed and permanent home and principal establishment.
