The Waldo County community has rallied to support 13 people displaced by a fire at Hunter Road in Unity last week, helping the families get off to a new start.

Though no injuries were reported, several families, including children and a baby, lost their home and all their belongings in the blaze.

A counselor at the Mount View Complex, where most of the children go to school, alerted Pay It Forward for Kids, a local organization dedicated to helping pay for school lunch debts and providing school supplies.

According to the group's Facebook page, "When someone is need, there is no limit."

The group immediately put out a call for help to the community and, in less than 24 hours, boxes and bags of clothing, bedding, shoes and toys began arriving, PIFFK founder Jen Wenz said.

"It was phenomenal — so overwhelming," she said.

By Sunday evening, a full delivery was made to the families, who Wenz said are "still trying to assess" what they need. For now, she said, the families have more than enough clothes.

Wenz, who owns the Aquarian Gift Shop in Belfast, has helped many families with her group, Pay It Forward for Kids.

"The program has received a positive response from the community," she said.

Together with her board members Regina Quattrucci, Pam Schultz and Davine Bussell, Wenz hopes to ease some financial burden, end hunger and food shaming, alleviate stress and provide for as many needs as possible in Waldo County school communities.

Other significant contributors to the effort include Jenn Richeson, Ashlee Couturier and Kalie McCarthy.

According to the PIFFK Facebook page, the group is still accepting furniture, home décor, kitchen items, blankets, children's toys, tables, chairs, lamps and clothes. Items may be dropped off at the The Aquarian Gift Shop (139 Searsport Ave., East Belfast), 218-1036.

Clothing and toy donations are also being accepted at the Freedom Town Office (71 Pleasant St.), 382-6178; and Sun Tan City (138 Main St., Belfast), 338-3357.

The ages of family members include an 11-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl, 5-year-old twin boys, a 2-year-old girl and an infant girl.
