Town Office

As much as we hate to admit it, snow season will soon be upon us. The Town Office often gets calls requesting the names and phone numbers of snow plow operators available for hire. If you have a snow plow business and would like to be added to our list, please contact the Town Office at 342-5411.

2019 dog licenses are now available for sale at the Town Office.

The next rabies clinic sponsored by the Waldo County Humane Society is on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Brooks Fire Department. Dogs must always be on a leash and under the owner’s control. Cats must be in secure carriers. Bring proof of the previous rabies vaccination to get a three-year certificate. The clinic is free for Waldo County residents, and $7 per shot for non-residents.

A clinic has been scheduled in Searsmont at the Community Building on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. A town clerk will also be available to sell 2019 dog licenses to Searsmont residents during the clinic.

The next election is Nov. 6 — a state, general and referendum election. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The ballot includes federal, state and county candidate races, as well as six referendum questions.

Absentee ballots are now available. You can request a ballot in person at the Town Office to vote in the office or take it with you; by telephone or online at to receive it by mail; or a family member can request and pick up a ballot for you. Voted ballots may be returned to the Town Office by a voter or other designated person, or by mail. However they come back, they must be received in the Town Office by 8 p.m. on Nov. 6. Voter registration must be done in person after Oct. 16, and proof of ID and residency are required.

Searsmont Historical Society

The October meeting of the Searsmont Historical Society will take place in the historical room at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18. Jim Murphy, the assessor's agent for Searsmont and other area towns, will give an informative talk on the complex process of assessing property for property tax purposes. Light refreshments and an important business meeting will follow. Everyone is invited to attend.

Please note that Jim Murphy will make a second presentation on this same subject to take place at an evening session planned for those who are unable to attend the afternoon session. The date and time will be announced next week, and there will be cookies.
